Today, Ring announced an upgraded version of its home security system. The Amazon-owned company says the second-generation Ring alarm hardware is sleeker, smaller, and easier to use. And with one-touch buttons, you can quickly request police, fire, or medical assistance.

Compared to the original hardware, the keypad and motion sensors are noticeably smaller. That should help if you have limited space to mount a keypad or tight spaces for motion sensors. The new matte finish (as opposed to the original glossy) should let the hardware stand out less too.

When you need to contact emergency services, you can press and hold on one of the new dedicated buttons for three seconds. You’ll need to subscribe to the professional monitoring plan ($10 a month or $100 annually) to use the buttons.

The other features, including Alexa integration, app integration, and temperature and carbon monoxide monitoring (with subscription), remain the same as the original hardware.

Speaking of the original hardware, if you don’t mind the larger size, Amazon discounted the first generation set. You’ll only save about $20 though, so it may be worth it to step up to the newer hardware. You can buy the second-generation version of the Ring security system on the company’s site today.
