When DJI announced the first Mavic Air, it was positioned as a budget-friendly option compared to the company’s premium lineup. But in exchange for the reduced price, customers gave up features and camera quality. With the Mavic Air 2, DJI has included every safety and camera feature consumer-level drone owners might want.
Unlike the old Mavic Air, the Mavic Air 2 shares a design with the Mavic Mini and the Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom. The drone’s four propellers are attached to arms that extend and fold out from the device’s body. The design allows for a more compact build.
Unlike the Mavic Mini, the Mavic Air 2 has obstacle sensors in the front, rear, and bottom of the drone that help the pilot from crashing. DJI’s Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) 3.0 update should help the craft avoid obstacles.
Most importantly, the Mavic Air 2 has a vastly-improved camera that rivals most prosumer drones. The 1/2-inch sensor is capable of shooting 4K video at 60fps and 120mbps, 12MP photos, and 48MP high-resolution images. Additionally, the drone has intelligent tracking modes and quick shots.
The Mavic Air 2 comes with a redesigned controller that looks like the company’s standalone Smart Controller. Instead of including two arms at the bottom of the controller that holds your smartphone using friction, the new controller has a spring-loaded phone mount at the top of the device that holds your handset in place. The new system should be less cumbersome and easier to use.
In addition to the Mavic Air 2’s standard package (which includes the controller, one battery, and all necessary cables), DJI offers a Fly More combo. The combo consists of a travel case, two additional batteries, a charging dock, ND (neutral density) filters, and extra propellers. As each battery offers up to 34 minutes of flight time, having three means you can spend more time flying and less time charging.
Due to logistical issues caused by the current COVID-19 health crisis, DJI will be delaying global shipments until late May. You can preorder the Mavic Air 2 starting today directly from DJI for $799. The Fly More combo can be yours for $988.
